What is ‘Japanifornia’?

The Ace Attorney series famously takes place in Los Angeles, while the Gyakuten Saiban series on which it is based takes place in Tokyo. Thus, a strange hybrid land was created, where things are mostly American, but sometimes their Japanese origins peak through around the edges. Or, sit there out in the open and are only barely concealed by clever localization.

Thus, Japanifornia was coined as the nickname for this odd setting. There is a theory among fans that this series takes place in an alternate timeline where the United States never went to war against Japan, thus allowing for much more immigration and integration in California. Thus the presence of shrine maidens and traditional Japanese villages, complete with their own imported tengu.

Whatever theory you subscribe to, it’s a charming aspect of the series, not a real flaw.
